Maverick Landing

Overview

In September 2001 the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) was awarded a $35 million HOPE VI Revitalization Grant to redevelop the Maverick Gardens housing development in East Boston, Massachusetts. The project involved demolishing 414 public housing units at the Maverick Gardens complex and neighboring Clippership sites and adding 426 units of mixed-income housing. Maverick Landing would also serve as a pilot in using renewable technologies in public housing developments. The project was registered with the U.S. Green Building Council and one of the buildings, Mid-Rise A, achieved LEED certification.

Environmental Aspects

Important green elements of Maverick Landing included roof-mounted photovoltaic systems on Mid-Rise A and a cogeneration system. The project also included a high performance building envelope, fiberglass windows for high thermal values, mechanically vented fresh air intake at residential units, a gas absorption chiller to reduce electrical loads, and use of healthy homes building criteria to select interior room finishes.
