William F. Stanley Elementary School

Overview

William Stanley Elementary School is a new school building. The building is three stories high with a total floor area of approximately 95,000 sq ft. The facility includes classrooms, a library, a kitchen-cafeteria section, and mechanical rooms throughout the building. There are two sections: section A is oriented east-west and houses mostly classrooms, while section B (which contains classrooms, a kitchen, a cafeteria and a library) is connected to section A on the east side at an angle of approximately 40 degrees.

Environmental Aspects

The school is aligned on an east-west axis, which allows building managers to control lighting and heat effectively while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Trees are planted at the south facade of the building and along the asphalt driveway to minimize heat island effects. Rainwater is recycled from the roof and parking areas to irrigate a new wetland habitat. The school has bicycle racks and is sited on a bus line and 0.5 miles from a commuter rail station to encourage use of alternate modes of transportation.

Light-level sensors, skylight glazing, light shelves, sunshade louvers, and clerestory windows maximize energy-saving use of natural daylight in classrooms and corridors. Interior and exterior lighting is designed to prevent direct-beam illumination from leaving the site. The school has high-efficiency boilers and a chiller with advanced technologies that reduce fossil fuel use. There is an organic raised-bed kitchen garden on the property, which is used only for educational purposes.

Green materials used in construction include Green Seal-approved carpeting, low and zero-VOC Paint, recycled ceiling tiles and recycled fiberglass insulation. No CFC refrigerants were used on the site.
